Every year thousands of Americans die from preventable medical mistakes, complications, and misdiagnoses. One of the biggest dangers is medication screw up. And many of us are also subjected to unnecessary surgeries and treatments. The Patient’s Playbook How To Save Your Life And The Life Of Those You Love, written by Leslie D. Michelson shows you how to navigate a broken health care system and get the best medical care for you or a loved one.

At some point in our lives, every one of us will face a health crisis. Mine began in May of 2000 when I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C (HCV). I was given the news over the phone by a nurse who did not even know what Hep C was or what caused it. My primary doctor did not call. Nor was any visit scheduled to discuss what the test results meant. I was just sent to a specialist and the appointment was over a month away.

In the meantime, I researched HCV and what I found out scared me to death. There was no cure and I could end up with cirrhosis or cancer of the liver. When I saw the specialist I asked what I could do. He told me “Nothing, just go on about my life as usual.” I was not happy with that answer at all!

Eventually, I found a better specialist who ran tests to check my viral load and performed a liver biopsy to see if there was any liver damage. I started treatment in November of 2002. I have been free of Hep C since but no one told me the virus and/or the treatment would have long-term effects on my health. Maybe they didn’t know at the time and I certainly didn’t know what questions to ask.

  1. The healthcare system is becoming harder to navigate. Partly because of my illnesses and partly because things don’t work like they used to. Any advice I can obtain would be beneficial. Thanks for sharing this book.

  2. I have multiple chronic illnesses and have immediate family members with health problems, so any information I can get that helps us navigate the health care system is very helpful.

    • Hi, Kathy. I think everyone can benefit from having a copy of The Patients Playbook. I know I learned a lot. Your article makes a good point about being careful with medications. I am going to download your free e-book.

  3. If you suffer from chronic pain, you can purchase neodymium magnets (available from Amazon) and place directly on the spot or spots with a piece of medical tape. You will be surprised at the result. Watch your blood pressure, however, as they may make an increase in it which will return to normal when the magnets are removed. Also, I purchased one of those Quell devices I saw advertised on TV, and it has greatly reduced my pain!! However, they are quite expensive ($250), but if you are suffering as I was, I believe it is well worth the money!!! Blessings and good health to all who read.

    • Hi, Katherine. I have heard of using magnets for pain but didn’t know anyone who tried it. I love my Quell. I don’t know what I would do without it now. I agree, it is well worth the money. Take care and gentle hugs to you.
