I have been using a new product to manage chronic fibromyalgia pain called Quell. Quell wearable pain relief is a device that stimulates your nerves and triggers your body’s natural pain blockers to relieve widespread pain. Quell is also the only over-the-counter nerve stimulation device that is FDA cleared for use while sleeping. Although the Quell is similar to a TENS unit, it can be worn 24 hours a day. So here’s the big question…does it work?
Disclosure: “I was given Quell as part of a product review through the Chronic Illness Bloggers network. Although the product was a gift, all opinions in this review remain my own and I was in no way influenced by the company.“
Quell Wearable Pain Relief was created by NeuroMetrix, a healthcare company that develops wearable medical technology that helps manage chronic pain, nerve diseases, and sleep disorders. According to their research, 81 percent of Quell users reported improvement in their chronic pain and 67 percent reported a reduction in their use of pain medication.
Quell is designed specifically to treat all types of chronic pain. It works especially well for nerve-related pain associated with fibromyalgia, diabetes, sciatica, and neuralgia. Quell works by electrically stimulating your sensory nerves through your skin which in turn closes a “pain gate” in the spinal cord blocking pain signals to the brain.

The Quell Wearable Pain Relief starter kit costs $249 and includes 1 Quell device, 1 adjustable sports band, 1 month supply of electrodes (2 electrodes), 1 charger, 1 charger adapter, and a quick start guide. Each electrode lasts for about two weeks and costs about $30 a month.
How To Use The Quell Wearable Pain Relief Device
The first time you use the Quell Relief device, you need to go through a quick calibration to customize your optimal level of therapy intensity. You begin by sliding the Quell device into the pouch on the band so that the button is inside the blue rimmed window with the lights facing up. Next, you snap the electrode into the connectors and remove the liner and save it to place over the electrode when not in use. Then you place the Quell band around your upper calf, one to two inches below your knee on either leg.
To calibrate your Quell Wearable Pain Relief device, you must sit with your foot flat on the floor. Push the button on the device and hold until you see the lights running back and forth. then release the button. Every time you feel the slightest tingling sensation, click the button. Typically you will push the button 3 to 6 times. When the lights on the device go off the calibration is complete and you are ready to start therapy.
Each therapy session lasts for 60 minutes with a 60-minute break between sessions. You need to take the device off to air out your skin every 6 hours during the day or after overnight use.
Quell detects when you are sleeping and will enter “gentle mode” at reduced intensity to not disrupt your sleep. You are able to choose a different sleep mode if you choose.
Quell Wearable Pain Relief Smartphone App
Although you can use your Quell device without the Quell Relief smartphone app, the app will enhance your experience and give you more control your Quell device.
You will be able to:
- Start, stop and adjust therapy
- Track the status of your current therapy session, or see how long you have to wait until the next therapy will start.
- Gain insights into your therapy and sleep trends.
- Customize therapy and control Sleep Modes.
- See the status of the battery life.
- Keep track of when to replace the electrode.
- Connect to the Quell Health Cloud and back up your therapy and sleep data.
- Access helpful “How To” videos.
Sleep mode is where the Quell Relief smartphone app really comes in handy. The app measures your sleep quality and tracks how much sleep you are getting. It also analyzes your body movements and position changes during the night.
Reading or watching TV in bed may be counted as time in bed by Quell. You can use “lights out” to indicate when you are going to sleep so sleep insights will be more accurate.
Did the Quell wearable pain relief device help my fibromyalgia pain?
Absolutely! I have used the Quell device for over a month now, both at night and during the day. While I am not pain-free, it has made a big difference. I can walk for longer periods of time and I can sit longer before I have to get up and move around. I have been able to get out of the house for longer periods of time and be more social. I went to my sister’s for Memorial Day and I was able to stay and visit my family instead of leaving early because of pain. Wearing Quell even made grocery shopping easier and less painful.
The Quell device has worked wonders for me and I am very happy with it. Any treatment that makes a life with chronic pain more livable is worth a shot. If you try Quell and it doesn’t work for you, they have a 60-day money back guarantee.
