A few weeks ago I was offered the opportunity to try an over-the-counter medical device called PainKARE. The PainKARE device works for all types of pain including some difficult to treat muscle and neuropathic pains. The device uses biostimulation to promote self-healing of the pain with long-lasting results.

PainKARE was developed by TrioWave Technologies. The device allows home users to take control of their own pain management. PainKARE is able to provide treatments designed to HEAL, not MASK the causes of chronic pain. Results from internal trials with individuals who are afflicted by Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) show 90% of patients received significant pain relief after two or three treatments.
The PainKARE system includes the PainKARE Patch, two self-adhesive electrodes, USB charging cable, USB extension cable, and user manual.
As soon as the device came, I charged the battery, snapped it together, and put it on. You know what I felt? Nothing! I wasn’t even sure it was working. The little green light told me it was but I couldn’t feel anything at all. The PainKARE Patch comes with a preloaded protocol that runs up to 4 hours so I decided to give it some time.
To tell you the truth I was a little disappointed not to feel that little buzz like with a TENS unit. But after a while, I started to notice a warmth way down deep in the muscle. I also had to admit the pain (I always have) in my shoulders and neck had lessened. It made me curious as to how PainKARE worked.
How PainKARE Works
PainKARE may look like a TENS device but it works differently. A TENS unit uses electrical current to block pain signals to the brain during treatment which only provides temporary relief. PainKARE also uses electrical current but the level is so low you can’t feel it. This low-level of electrical current is called a microcurrent. A microcurrent is 1,000 times less than the current a TENS device uses.
When microcurrent is applied to the body at a specific frequency, it increases the body’s ability to heal and repair itself. FSM can help promote pain relief, relax muscles, dissolve scar tissue and improve healing, all at accelerated rates. It’s been found that frequency-specific microcurrent (FSM) is especially effective at treating nerve and muscle pain.
One of the ways FSM works is by increasing the production of the substance ATP (Adenosine triphosphate). ATP is the main energy source for all cells in the body. Rat studies show that FSM increases cellular energy production by as much as 500% (Cheng, 1987).
What’s more, FSM has been shown to help improve circulation, increase energy, repair damaged tissue and detoxify the body. In a fibromyalgia study of 160 people, patients said their pain reduced from a 7 to a 1 on the pain scale after their first treatment. The effects of FSM treatment can last several days or longer after only a few treatments.
I am excited and hopeful about the technology used by the PainKARE Patch. I am actually sitting here typing with no pain or stiffness in my neck and shoulders. In fact, the pain has been gone since yesterday’s treatment. That has not happened in years and years.
There is free PainKARE App available. The app allows you to look up suggestions for electrode placement, as well as monitor and track treatments. I was able to use the app to look up where to place electrodes but the app could not find my device. I contacted PainKare and they suggested I go to “settings” and click on “change device”. But that didn’t work. They also said they were aware of some problems connecting to the device and would be releasing a new version of the app by the end of the month. Although I am disappointed I wasn’t able to use the app to its full potential, I am looking forward to the new version.
