D-ribose is a simple sugar found in every cell of your body. It is an essential ingredient in stimulating natural energy production. Supplementing d-ribose is especially beneficial to those dealing with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, coronary artery disease, and congestive heart failure because energy demands exceed what the body is able to produce.

Because ribose can affect your energy levels, researchers have focused on its potential benefits for fibromyalgia. Studies show that d-ribose can increase energy, improve mitochondrial function, and reduce muscle pain for those suffering from fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue.

A study in The Open Pain Journal, takes 257 patients with FM and CFS from 53 different nationwide clinics. Patients were assessed one week before treatment and then at one-week intervals. They were asked to rate their overall well-being, energy, sleep, pain and cognitive function.

203 patients completed the trial and the findings were:

  • 61.3% increase in energy
  • 37% increase in overall wellbeing
  • 29.3% improvement in sleep
  • 30% improvement in mental functioning
  • 15.6% decrease in pain

These improvements began in the first week of treatment and increased through the 3 week trial period.

How D-Ribose is used in energy production

D-ribose is a simple five-carbon sugar known as pentose. It is found in every cell of our body. The body preserves ribose for making the energy molecules that power the heart, muscles, brain and every other tissue in the body. D-Ribose is the fuel that mitochondria use to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

The amount of ATP we have in our tissues determines how much energy we have. If we do have enough ribose in our cells, it cannot make enough ATP. When our cells and tissues don’t get enough energy, they can’t function properly. The result is overwhelming fatigue and chronic pain.

As cellular energy becomes more depleted, fatigue and muscle pain become more severe.

Generally, the body makes enough D-ribose in tissues like the heart, skeletal muscle, nerve tissue, and the brain to meet its daily metabolic needs. However, people whose cells and tissues are oxygen-depleted, or because of illness are otherwise metabolically challenged, may be deficient in D-ribose. Because their energy demands exceed what their bodies are able to produce, people with ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure (CHF), hypertension, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome, in addition to serious athletes, need to supplement with D-ribose.”

Recommended dose for fibromyalgia and CFS is five grams, three times a day.

Side effects are generally mild and can include stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, and headache.

D-ribose can cause low blood sugar and is not recommended if you have diabetes.

I first read about D-Ribose in Dr. Teitelbaum’s book From Fatigued to Fantastic. It was one of the first supplements I started take taking when I went off all my medications in 2012. My energy level increased rather quickly and I no longer needed to take a nap during the day. D-ribose supplements that are verified for purity can be rather expensive. Sometimes money can be an issue and so I don’t take it consistently as I should.
