Be Careful What You Wish For

“Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.” We often wish for things without really taking into account everything that comes with them. Often, there may be unforeseen and unpleasant consequences.

In the story, The Monkey’s Paw, a man finds a magical monkey’s paw that can grant him a certain number of wishes. He makes the wishes and they are granted, but each one goes horribly wrong.

He wishes for money to pay off his mortgage. The next day, his son is killed at work and he receives the exact amount he needed to pay off the mortgage from the death benefit. He got his wish, but at a price he most certainly would not have chosen.

The other day I read a blog post written by someone with fibromyalgia. Her friend told her that at least it’s only fibromyalgia and she should be grateful it’s not cancer. She told her friend, she wished it was cancer because at least it would end.

I have lived with fibromyalgia for over 12 years and I know it can be difficult to cope at times. Her friend, of course was definitely insensitive…but, to wish it was cancer instead of fibromyalgia?

I am grateful that it is ONLY fibromyalgia.

My mom battled cancer for several years. She was the strongest woman I have ever known. She did not complain or feel sorry for herself. She lost that battle five years ago. Ironically, not because of the cancer, it was the chemo..too much, too long.

She was on her third round of chemo because there was still a small spot on her lungs. It wasn’t until after she died that we found out the spot on her lungs was caused from asbestos. Chemo was never going to make that spot go away.

Chemo is a poison that not only kills cancer cells, it destroys healthy cells. It wrecks havoc on your body and your mind. There is pain, nausea, vomiting and overwhelming fatigue and brain fog.

Even if you beat the cancer, the side effects of chemo can last a lifetime.

I came across this blog, This Little Light Of Mine. The blogger is Whitney Cox, a 27-year-old wife and mother who is fighting stage IV cancer.

Whitney is an inspiration and truly courageous. She has not given up hope and through her faith in God, she is determined to beat cancer. I pray she does.

No matter how bad fibromyalgia can get, it is not hopeless. In most cases, there are things you can do to make yourself feel better. You just have to be willing to try and try and try again.

Don’t take life for granted. There is always someone’s situation that is far worse than our own. Please, be careful what you wish for.

    • Hi, Liza. More than 2/3 of people with fibromyalgia have regular or daily dizziness. Medications such as antidepressants can cause dizziness but there are a number of other reasons which I covered in this post: Dizziness & Balance Problems With Fibromyalgia. I don’t have dizziness every day like I used to but I still deal with it quite often. I know it’s frustrating especially when your doctor can’t help you figure it out.
